How to Choose Flights and Accommodation for Your Umrah Journey

Choose your dates and hotel first, then pick flights that fit around them. Flights get you there, but your hotel shapes how rested, comfortable and focused you feel once you arrive. Booking in that order stops you being locked into awkward flight times or a hotel that suits the schedule but not your needs.

This guide covers both decisions for UK travellers, with questions to ask, mistakes to avoid and a note on protecting your money.

Start with your dates and the Saudi calendar

Check that your dates fall within the official Umrah season. The Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah has published the 1448 AH calendar, which sets 23 March 2027 as the last day for pilgrims to enter the Kingdom and 7 April 2027 as the last day for departure. If you plan to travel later, wait for the next official calendar.

GOV.UK's entry guidance says the electronic travel authorisation and the electronic visa waiver cover Umrah outside the Hajj season. It also warns that during Hajj, visitors not performing Hajj may be stopped from flying to Jeddah, Madinah and Taif, so check with your airline if you are considering dates near it.

Choosing flights

Departure airport and routes

Many UK pilgrims fly from London, Manchester or Birmingham, but your nearest airport may be fine too. Compare:

  • Direct or one stop. Direct flights are quicker, and a stop can lower the fare but adds waiting time and a risk of missed connections. Older travellers often find direct flights easier.

  • Arrival airport. Jeddah and Madinah are the usual gateways. Match your arrival airport to the city where your package begins, and ask how the transfer works.

  • Arrival time. A late-night arrival can mean a long wait for check-in. Ask what the hotel offers if your room is not ready.

Baggage and timing

Check the allowance for hold and hand luggage before you pay, particularly if you are carrying ihram items, medicines and gifts. Allowances vary by airline and ticket.

Fares and airport crowds are often highest in the days around Eid, so avoid that window if you can. Flexible fare options can be worth the extra cost if your leave is not certain.

Assistance for older or less mobile passengers

The Civil Aviation Authority says passengers with a disability or reduced mobility are legally entitled to free assistance when flying from a UK airport on any airline. It covers getting through the airport, boarding, support during the flight and help at the destination airport. Ask your airline how and when to request it.

Choosing accommodation

Location comes first

The most useful question is how long it takes to walk from the hotel to the mosque, and to which gate. Ask for minutes on foot rather than a vague description. Then check:

  • Whether the route is flat or has steps and crossings

  • Whether it is shaded, since GOV.UK warns that summer temperatures in Saudi Arabia may exceed 50°C

  • How busy it gets at prayer times

  • Whether the hotel has lifts and quick access to the lobby

Comparing hotel categories

Stars give a rough idea of facilities, but they are not a measure of distance. A well-located lower-category hotel can suit you better than a more expensive one that is further away.

That said, some pilgrims value more space and services, particularly after long days of worship, for older relatives or families with young children. Those who want that level of comfort often compare 5 star Umrah Packages with other categories to see what the extra cost covers for their dates.

Ask each hotel about:

  • The exact walking distance and the gate used

  • Room size and whether families can stay together

  • Lifts, air conditioning and step-free access

  • Which meals are included and when they are served

  • Early check-in or late check-out options

Splitting your stay between Makkah and Madinah

Many packages divide nights between the two cities. Ask how many nights you will spend in each, in which order, and how you travel between them. If your time is limited, shorter transfers and fewer hotel changes leave more energy for worship.

Package or separate bookings?

A package combines flights, hotels, transfers and often visa help. It is simpler and can offer financial protection. GOV.UK's travel advice tells UK pilgrims to make sure their travel agent or operator is ATOL protected when booking Umrah.

Separate bookings give you control over every choice, but you handle changes, delays and any problems yourself. Make sure you understand what happens if one part of the trip changes.

Whichever route you choose, GOV.UK advises paying by credit card where possible, keeping records and getting everything in writing. It also warns that organised criminals target people planning Hajj and Umrah, and that many victims are over 65. Research the company even if family or friends recommend it.

A simple booking order

  1. Confirm your dates against the Saudi season calendar.

  2. Decide on a comfort level and shortlist hotels.

  3. Ask for the walking distance to the mosque, in minutes.

  4. Choose flights that arrive at a sensible hour and suit your party.

  5. Check baggage allowances and any assistance you need.

  6. Check protection, including the ATOL certificate, and get terms in writing.

  7. Keep every confirmation and receipt together.

Common mistakes

  • Booking cheap flights that arrive in the middle of the night, then paying for an extra hotel night

  • Choosing a hotel on star rating alone without checking distance

  • Not asking whether the hotel can accommodate your whole group

  • Assuming meals, transfers or visa help are included

  • Paying by bank transfer to a personal account

FAQs

Is it cheaper to book flights and hotels separately? Sometimes, but you may lose package protection and take on the risk of changes. Compare the full cost, not just the headline fare.

How close should my hotel be to the mosque? It depends on your needs. For older relatives or young children, a shorter, flatter walk is often worth more than extra facilities.

Do I need travel insurance? Yes. GOV.UK recommends checking that your policy covers local treatment and medical evacuation.
